Getting around Phuket

Phuket International Airport is positioned at the north end of the island and caters to domestic and international flights from major carriers, as well as budget airlines.

TRAIN SERVICES

There is no train service in Phuket, however the nearest railway station can be found in Surat Thani, which is approximately 220 kilometres away. Surat Thani Railway Station runs services to major cities, such as Bangkok to the north, as well as Trang and Hat Yai to the south.

BUS TERMINALS

Phuket Town has two bus terminals, Terminal 1 being the old station and Terminal 2 the new one. Terminal 1 is situated off Phang Nga Road in the centre of town, while Terminal 2 can be found along Thepkasattri Road. Both bus stations run services to all major cities throughout Thailand. A variety of buses are available, ranging from state-owned to private express, air-conditioned or the most lavish, VIP category, all of which reflect prices according to their level of comfort.

LOCAL TRANSPORT

Take a songthaew for a taste of local transportation. These multi-passenger vehicles are usually converted from pick-up trucks with bench style seating. They guarantee an economical mode of transport albeit a slow journey to and from your destination.

Alternatively, hop into a tuk tuk for another authentic way to get around, or try a motorbike taxi or taxi. Ensure that you agree on a price prior to using any of these modes of transport.

CAR & MOTORCYCLE HIRE

You can choose between renting a motorcycle or a car, both of which are available from a multitude of companies. You must present an international driver’s license valid in the relevant category and ensure that you follow the safety laws by wearing a helmet / seatbelt at all times. Remember that it is your responsibility to check the car or motorcycle for any scratches prior to rental. Never leave your passport as security for hire under any circumstances.

FERRIES

Ferry services run from Rassada Pier in Phuket Town to the surrounding islands and mainland destinations Private speedboats are faster but more expensive.
