Activities: Surfing in Phuket

Phuket's west coast has gained popularity over the years as the island's prime surfing destination. Although the waves are not as big as those in Hawaii and Indonesia, it is possible to catch a decent wave or learn to surf in Phuket.

Kata Beach is the main beach where all of the surfing action happens, and there are places to rent both long and short boards or sign up for surfing lessons. The surfing instructors are local boys who have been in the water most of their lives, and they are knowledgeable about not only the sport but also the currents, rip tides and waves.

Prices to rent boards and take surfing lessons vary, but they tend to be by the hour and they are affordable. Although Kata Beach is the best place to learn to surf, you can rent boards on other west coast beaches. However, it is not guaranteed that there will be ample waves.

Phuket hosts a few surfing competitions during the course of the monsoon season including contests at Kata Beach, Patong Beach, Kalim and Kamala Beach. If you are looking to get involved in the Phuket surf scene, but do not know where to start contact Chanin Aiyarak at info@phuketboardriders.com
